Sacred and Profane Series: 1992-1993
The paintings of the Sacred and Profane series articulate conflicts between a felt spiritualism and the physical world. The paintings share a similar overall dry, warm surface treatment. Oil paints are used for the first time on top of or next to acrylic painted surfaces. Iridescent acrylic paints contribute to a reflective metallic effect, conjuring a feeling of relic. With titles such as Duo, Order, Station and Paradise, the Sacred and Profane Series is an oblique meditation on an unsettled secular religiosity.
